Ambrosius Francken I

Ambrosius Francken (1544, Herentals – 1618, Antwerp), was a Flemish Baroque painter and well known member of the Francken family.

Biography

According to Karel van Mander, who listed him as one of Frans Floris's pupils, Francken spent time in Tournai where he lived at the Bishop's residence. Van Mander had met him there while he himself was residing as a young pupil at his master Pieter Vlerick's house.[1]

According to the RKD he was a pupil of Frans Floris and of his father Nicolaes Francken.[2] He married Clara Pickarts and later became the teacher of Hieronymous Francken II.[2] He is known for religious works and historical allegories. Like his pupil and nephew, he sometimes painted staffage in the landscapes of Abraham Govaerts.[2]
